According to data from the State Labour Inspectorate, 18 fatal workplace accidents were recorded in Lithuania in 2025, while 122 employees suffered serious injuries. An additional three workers died in work-related traffic accidents.
Safety specialists note that the causes of workplace accidents remain largely the same year after year — rushing, insufficient attention to safety, poorly organized work processes, and excessive self-confidence.
Construction remains one of the most dangerous sectors
Statistics from the State Labour Inspectorate show that the construction industry recorded the highest number of serious and fatal workplace accidents in 2025. The sector reported 5 fatal accidents and 30 serious workplace injuries.
Most accidents occur while working at height — on scaffolding, roofs, ladders, or unprotected structures. Falls from height alone claimed the lives of 3 workers in Lithuania during 2025, while another 46 people suffered serious injuries.
According to workplace safety specialists, accidents in construction are often caused not by complicated technical failures, but by the everyday neglect of safety rules. In many cases, only a few seconds of carelessness are enough for a normal working day to end in tragedy.
Transportation and warehousing also carry major risks
Transportation and warehousing jobs also remain among the most dangerous professions. In 2025, the sector recorded 1 fatal accident and 25 serious workplace injuries.
Employees in this field work daily around heavy machinery, forklifts, loading operations, and fast-paced environments. Accidents often occur when workers are crushed by loads, fall during work, or operate too close to moving equipment.
Specialists say fatigue and long working hours also play a significant role in the transportation industry. Even a brief lapse in concentration in such environments can lead to severe consequences.
Forestry work continues to be highly dangerous
Forestry is also considered one of the highest-risk industries. According to the State Labour Inspectorate, the forestry sector recorded 3 fatal accidents and 1 serious workplace injury in 2025.
Working with falling trees, chainsaws, and heavy equipment requires constant vigilance. Conditions are made even more difficult by challenging weather and remote work locations.
Jobs involving industrial machinery and electrical equipment are also considered particularly hazardous. In 2025, one worker died due to contact with operating machinery, while another seven employees suffered serious injuries.
Most accidents begin with “nothing will happen to me”
Safety specialists note that many workplace accidents occur because of inadequate safety supervision, poor occupational risk assessment, and employees failing to follow safety requirements.
Another major issue is overconfidence caused by years of work experience. Employees with long careers sometimes begin ignoring basic safety procedures because they feel they have “done it hundreds of times before.” Unfortunately, these are often the exact moments when the most serious accidents happen.
Workplace safety is not just a formality
Although the statistics are gradually improving, the State Labour Inspectorate emphasizes that the situation remains serious. Early data from 2026 shows that within the first four months of the year alone, Lithuania had already recorded 38 serious workplace accidents and 5 fatal ones.
Specialists stress that many of these accidents could be prevented through stronger prevention measures, better employee training, and real safety control in the workplace. According to experts, even seemingly small precautions — such as wearing a helmet, using safety harnesses, or taking an extra minute for a safety check — can sometimes prevent severe injuries or even save lives.
